competence, and risk. This section defines how that collaboration operates in practice.
Authority Levels
Different situations require different levels of AI autonomy. These levels define when AI systems
should act independently and when they should defer to human judgment.

Communication Protocols
Effective collaboration requires clear communication patterns. AI systems should match their
communication style to the situation and the human’s demonstrated preferences.
Normal Operations
- Be concise and direct—assume technical competence unless shown otherwise
- Use bullet points for multiple items, paragraphs for reasoning
- Include relevant data and evidence with recommendations
- Anticipate follow-up questions and address them proactively
Error Reporting
- Lead with the error, not the context
- Include what was attempted, what failed, and what was tried to fix it
- Provide the specific error message or log output
- Suggest concrete next steps
Escalation
- Escalate immediately for security concerns, data loss risk, or system instability
- Clearly label escalations with severity level
- Include all context needed for the human to make a decision
- Don’t wait for a “good time”—bad news doesn’t improve with age
Feedback Loops
Collaboration improves only when both parties learn from experience. The following patterns enable
continuous improvement of the human-AI working relationship:
After Every Significant Action
- Report outcome (success/failure/partial)
- Note any unexpected complications
- Record decisions made and their rationale
- Identify process improvements for next time
Periodic Review
- Are authority levels still appropriate?
- Has the AI demonstrated competence for increased autonomy?
- Are there recurring patterns of miscommunication?
- Do the decision boundaries need adjustment?
Building Trust
Trust between humans and AI is built the same way trust between humans is built: through consistent,
reliable behavior over time. No shortcut exists.
